Joe Otto

President & Chief Executive Officer

Joe Otto is President and CEO of Alpine Data Labs. In his role, Mr. Otto is responsible for Alpine’s strategic direction, growth initiatives and overall execution. Prior to joining Alpine, Joe served for five years as the Senior Vice President of Sales and Services for Greenplum, where he established Greenplum’s commercial footprint and developed it into a global business. Joe’s 30 year technology career includes significant leadership roles at Sun Microsystems, Cisco Systems, and EMC, as well as executive leadership positions in early stage startups in Artificial Intelligence, Networking and CRM. Throughout his career Joe has developed high performance sales and marketing teams, driving innovation to deliver business transformation and extreme growth. Joe is a graduate of The Ohio State University with a Bachelors degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Steven Hillion, Chief Product Officer at Alpine Data Labs.

Steven Hillion

Chief Product Officer

Steven Hillion has been leading large engineering and analytics projects for fifteen years. Before joining Alpine Data Labs, he founded the analytics group at Greenplum, leading a team of data scientists and also designing and developing new open-source and enterprise analytics software. Before that, he was Vice President of Engineering at M-Factor, Inc. (acquired by DemandTec) where he built analytical applications that became a global standard for demand modeling. Earlier, at Kana Communications, Steven led the engineering group during the two largest releases of its flagship product. At Scopus Technology (later Siebel Systems) he co-founded development groups for finance, telecom and other verticals. He received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley, and was a King Charles I Scholar at Oxford University.

Bennett Thuener

Chief Financial Officer

Bennett Thuener is the Chief Financial Officer at Alpine Data Labs. Bennett has over 15 years of experience in building finance and accounting infrastructure and operations management for start-ups and emerging companies. The focus of Bennett’s activities includes building and leading the G&A functions (Finance, Accounting, Human Resources, and Administrative support functions), project management for the development of internal and externally facing finance systems/processes, leading and supporting fund raising activity, M&A Activity, and strategic analysis and operational process development. Prior to joining Alpine, Bennett led finance and operations at various other high-growth companies such as Digg, Jigsaw Data Corp, Uptilt, Redherring, and QuickPay.

Bennett graduated from University of Oregon with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration, dual concentration in Finance and Entrepreneurship, and completed his MBA at Santa Clara University, also with a focus on Finance.

Thomas Awe

SVP, Worldwide Sales

Thomas Awe is the Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Field Operations for Alpine Data Labs. In this role, Mr. Awe is responsible for growing and managing Global revenue for the company. Most recently, Mr. Awe held the roles of Vice President of Global Accounts and Vice President of the US Central Area at Avaya. He was Executive Director at Sun Microsystems leading initiatives in Network Storage, iPlanet/Sun ONE and Global Sales. Mr. Awe was the Founder and CEO of Redcape Software, a venture-backed Java start-up that was acquired by Sun. He is a graduate of the University of St. Thomas and the Executive Institute at Stanford University.

Lawrence Spracklen

VP of Engineering

Lawrence Spracklen leads engineering at Alpine. He is tasked with the continued development Alpine's advanced analytics platform. He brings to Alpine a diverse range of experiences, spanning processor design and research, distributed systems experience, software optimization and multi-thread scalability, security, and hardware accelerator development.Prior to joining Alpine, Lawrence worked at Ayasdi as both VP of Engineering and Chief Architect. Before this, Lawrence spent over a decade working at Sun Microsystems, Nvidia and VMware, where he led teams focused on the intersection of hardware architecture and software performance and scalability.Lawrence holds a Ph.D. in Electronic engineering from the University of Aberdeen, a B.Sc. in Computational Physics from the University of York and has been issued over 30 US patents.

Josh Lewis

VP of Industry Applications

Josh Lewis has ten years of experience across academia and industry in machine learning, data analysis, and user experience. Prior to joining Alpine,Josh lead the frontend engineering team at Ayasdi where he built apps and APIs for the healthcare, pharmaceutical, and finance verticals, as well as Ayasdi’s domain-general data analysis and visualization software. Before joining Ayasdi, Josh was a PhD student and postdoc at the UC San Diego Cognitive Science Department where he investigated the role of human perception and insight in the data analysis process. He also developed novel software for applying unsupervised machine learning algorithms called Divvy, a project that was supported by a multi-year NSF grant. Josh graduated from Pomona College with majors in Cognitive Science and Philosophy.

Brian Murphy

VP, Business Development

Brian Murphy is the VP of Sales for the Eastern Region at Alpine Data Labs. In his role, he is responsible for driving revenue through sales and strategic partnerships. Brian brings more than 10 years of sales leadership experience to the team, with past leadership roles at several high-growth enterprise software companies including Cognos, Vertica, Hadapt and Salesforce.com. As a Sales Director at Hadapt, Brian was responsible for growing the business by 200% in the first year, and the company was subsequently acquired by Teradata. As a Sales Manager at Vertica, he grew his sales territory by 400% during his tenure and the company was then acquired by HP. Brian is passionate about taking disruptive technologies and applying them to various business problems across verticals.

Tim Guleri

Managing Director, Sierra Ventures

Tim Guleri joined Sierra Ventures firm in 2001 and focuses on investments in the consumer (mobile Internet), enterprise software (SaaS), infrastructure software (security, deployment, management), and open source. Prior to joining the firm, he built two software infrastructure companies. Tim served as the Vice Chairman and the Executive Vice President of Business Development at Epiphany. He co-founded Octane Software and served as the Chief Executive Officer and the Chairman from 1997 to 2000. Tim served as a Vice President of Technical Field Operations and Product Marketing at Scopus Technology from 1992 to 1997, heading the Sales and Marketing functions. He began his career as an Executive in Information Technology at LSI Logic between 1989 and 1992.

Leo Spiegel

Managing Partner, Mission Ventures

Leo Spiegel is a Managing Partner at Mission Ventures. Prior to joining Mission Ventures, Leo Spiegel was President of Digital Island, Inc., a leading provider of global e-business network and content delivery services. Leo joined Digital Island as a result of a merger with Sandpiper Networks, Inc., where he was the Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer. In 2000, Leo won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Prior to his leadership of Sandpiper Networks, Leo served as Senior Vice President and CTO of Donnelley Enterprise Solutions Incorporated. Leo was the co-founder, EVP and CTO of LANSystems, a network utilities software developer and international systems integration firm, which was sold to Intel Corporation and R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company.

Frank Lee, Vice President UMC Capital.

Frank Lee

Vice President, UMC Capital

Frank Lee is a Vice President at UMC Capital. He joined the firm in 2006 and focuses on investments in Big Data, Cloud, mobile, communications and semiconductors industries. Before joining UMC Capital, He worked at Vertex Management Inc, a Singapore based venture capital company, and was responsible for investments in communications, wireless and semiconductors industries. Prior to Vertex Management Inc, He was a management consultant at AT Kearney.

Luis Llovera

Managing Director of Robert Bosch, LLC.

Mr. Luis Llovera is a Managing Director of Robert Bosch LLC. He joined in 2008 and advises Robert Bosch Venture Capital GmbH regarding its investment activities in the U.S.A.

Prior to Bosch, Mr. Llovera was an Investment Partner of Communications Fund at Siemens Venture Capital for over six years, where he directed investment activities in the optical communications market, access technologies and semiconductors. During his 24 years career with Siemens, Mr. Llovera held a variety of roles in R&D, as well as marketing, business development and sales support. He served as Executive at Siemens Communications, Inc. Before joining the Siemens Venture Capital team.


Jonathan Francis

Senior Data Scientist, Nike

Jonathan Francis is a senior data scientist at Nike in Global Digital and Direct-to-Consumer Marketing.

Jonathan brings nearly 20 years of experience in advancing analytics for leading data-driven companies, including Amazon.com, T-Mobile, Microsoft, and Expedia. He has an M.S. in Statistics from Oregon State University and a B.A. in Mathematics from St. Olaf College. Having successfully applied analytics to identify business opportunities in database marketing and website optimization, Jonathan will be helping to drive the strategic direction of Alpine's product suite, and ensuring it meets the needs of analytic practitioners across industries.

Dr. Diego Klabjan

Director, Masters Program in Analytics at Northwestern University

Diego Klabjan is Founding Director of the Master of Science in Analytics program at Northwestern University, where he is an associate professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences since 2007.

Prior to that, he was at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, after obtaining his doctorate from the Milton School of Industrial and Systems Engineering of the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1999. Professor Klabjan has led projects with large companies such as FedEx Express, GM, and United Continental, and he is also the CEO and founder of Opex Analytics LLC.
